Skywatchers have a unique opportunity to witness a rare comet passing by Earth this week before disappearing into the vast universe forever. Known as Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, this comet was first spotted by astronomers in China in January 2023 and later observed in South Africa using the ATLAS telescope system. Comets are celestial bodies composed of dust and ice, remnants from the formation of the solar system billions of years ago. Typically, comets are too faint to see without a telescope, but a few, like Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, can be visible to the naked eye. Originating from the Oort Cloud on the outskirts of the solar system, this comet may not return again as it moves away from the sun due to possible gravitational influences from other objects. The closest approach of Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS to Earth is expected on October 12, within a distance of 44 million miles. It will appear brightest on the evening of October 9, due to the scattering of light from the sun, known as forward scattering, making it possible for observers to see it even during the day."Nichols emphasized the rare opportunity to view comet ibility, urging people to witness its beauty as it graces the sky. The comet will be visible to the naked eye starting from October 9 until the end of the month. For the best view, experts recommend observing from the darkest possible location with a clear western horizon. If attempting to spot the comet after sunset, it will appear low on the horizon where it has set. Although faint, using a telescope or binoculars can enhance the observation experience. While the comet may dim after October 9, it will still be observable. Make sure not to miss this extraordinary sight as such opportunities do not come often.
